All About BMW Motorrad Brake Calipers

Your BMW motorcycle's disc brake system work much like a disc brake system does on a car. Unlike a car's brake system, where your pressing the brake pedal causes all of the brakes to engage at the same time, there are options in terms of how your motorcycle's brakes work.

How Motorcycle Brake Calipers Work

Most motorcycles activate the front and rear brakes independently of each other, though some motorcycles engages both brakes with a handlebar lever. No matter how yours work, though, the brake calipers play a crucial role in stopping the rotation of your wheels. When you engage the brakes by using the handlebar lever or foot pedal, the master cylinder sends an incompressible liquid to pistons in the brake calipers. The building pressure forces the calipers to close brake pads against the brake rotors -- or discs, as some call them. That produces the resistance needed to slow you down.

How to Spot Bad Brake Calipers

Eventually, though, the heat and pressure generated during the act of braking can cause parts to fail. Signs of trouble include:

  • Grinding or squealing sounds when you're braking
  • You pull to one side when you brake
  • It takes more time or distance to come to a stop

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, conduct an inspection of your entire braking system. If that indicates that your brake calipers need replacing, do it as quickly as possible
